Track email activity on your website using Google Analytics

Link tagging is used by Google Analytics (and other software that works with UTM tags) to track traffic to your website originating from emails.

When link tagging is enabled, each link in your email is automatically tagged using tags called UTM tags. UTM tags are used by Google Analytics and other software for reporting purposes.

It's unrelated to Envoke email activity reports such as opens and clicks, etc.

You should only use this setting if you have a Google Analytics account and wish to check page visits that originate form emails sent from Envoke.

How to turn on Google Analytics UTM link tagging

You can turn link tagging on and off on the account level on the account settings page (this makes sense if you're using this setting often) or individually for each email you send on the Configure tab of the email editor (this makes sense if you only use this setting occasionally).

When link tagging is enabled, every link in every email campaign is tagged as follows:

  • utm_medium = email
value set to "email", cannot be changed

  • utm_campaign = [name of email campaign]
automatically populated with the name of your email, can be changed manually

  • utm_source = [list of recipients]
automatically populated with the name of your recipient list, can be changed manually

  • utm_keyword = [email subject line]
automatically populated with the subject line of your email, can be changed manually

  • utm_content = [blank]
not populated automatically, can be changed manually

For example a link to

http://www.website.com/

will turn into:

http://www.website.com/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Winter_Promo&utm_source=Subscribers&utm_keyword=Monthly_Newsletter

Known error with link tagging

While the majority of websites work well with tagged links some web pages don't support link tagging and will break when link tagging is enabled. This is beyond Envoke's control as it's up to the web servers that host these pages to support or block tagged links.

For example:

The tagged link http://www.website.com/features/?utm_medium=email won't work while the untagged version http://www.website.com/features loads correctly.

To resolve this issue you need to turn off link tagging either for individual messages under the Configure tab of the email editor or if you don't plan to use Google Analytics link tracking at all then you can turn this setting off for the entire account under the Email Campaigns section of the Account Settings page.

Link tagging is unrelated to Envoke email activity reports such as opens and clicks, etc. You'll still get email campaign reports even when link tagging is disabled. Link tagging is primarily used for reporting in Google Analytics and related Google services.
